Itching to get away from it all and explore the open waters? A private boat charter can be a perfect escape, a peaceful journey among nature, where you can relax and have fun with family, friends, or other loved ones. But before you board your vessel of choice, there are some important things to remember so that your trip will run smoothly. If you're wondering what to bring on a private boat charter, you're in the right place!

We've put together a complete pre-trip list of what you should bring on your boat adventure to have a successful – and comfortable – private boat charter!

Pack Sunscreen (Reef-Safe Sunscreen)

First on our list of what to bring on your private boat charter is protection against the sun. The sun-filled days spent on the open seas in the USVI can be deceptively bright. So make sure to include sunscreen in your bag, preferably with an SPF of at least 30 or higher.

The last thing you want is to return from your trip sunburnt and uncomfortable! Bring enough for everyone aboard, as well as some extra in case of emergencies.

It's important though that you use reef-safe sunscreen.

In 2019 the USVI Legislature passed a bill that bans the sale, distribution, and import of sunscreen products containing oxybenzone and octinoxate. This is because these chemicals can completely devastate coral and marine life.

It's best to opt for options such as mineral-based sunscreens which contain Titanium and Zinc Oxide. Beware of any label that just says “reef safe”. Read the ingredients before purchasing it!

Sunglasses, Longsleeves, and Hats to Protect Yourself From the Sun’s Rays

The sun’s rays can be harmful to your skin, eyes, and overall health. To protect yourself from the sun’s UV radiation, make sure you bring along sunglasses, a long-sleeved shirt, and a hat on your private boat charter. A wide-brimmed hat is best for keeping the sun out of your eyes and off of your face.

You’ll be out in the open waters all day, so properly protecting your skin is important.

Bring a Cooler With Food, Drinks, and Snacks for the Trip

When you’re out in the middle of the ocean, generally there won’t be any stops for food or drinks. So make sure you bring a cooler with plenty of snacks and beverages to keep yourselves refreshed throughout your trip. Pack sandwiches, chips, fruit, veggies – whatever suits your fancy!

Bring a few extra water bottles too so that everyone stays hydrated during the journey. And don't forget ice packs to keep perishables cold. It's also a good idea to pack some garbage bags for trash and recycling.

With that being said, you should contact the company you booked your private charter with and find out if there will be any stops along the way. For example, on our private boat charter in the USVI, as we island hop, we also have the ability to stop at several oceanfront restaurants.

Bring Some Extra Cash for Lunch & The Crew

When you’re out at sea on a private boat charter, it’s important to remember to bring some extra cash. This is for two reasons – lunch and tipping the crew.

As previously mentioned, there (generally) won’t be any stops along the way for food and drinks, so you should pack plenty of snacks and drinks in your cooler for throughout the day. However, if there are nearby restaurants or dockside eateries that can be reached during your journey, it may be nice to have a little extra money on hand.

Additionally, it is customary to tip the crew after your cruise has come to an end. Tipping is a great way to show your appreciation for their hard work and ensure that they provided good service throughout the journey.

It is recommended to tip around 15-25% of the total cost of your private boat charter depending on how satisfied you were with the experience. So make sure you bring some extra cash just in case!

Pack Swimsuits and Towels So You Can Enjoy Swimming or Snorkeling Activities

If you plan on swimming or snorkeling during your private boat charter, make sure to pack a few swimsuits and towels. It’s also good to have some extra beachwear for changing in/out of your wet suits.

If you want to go snorkeling, be sure to contact your private boat charter and find out if they provide the gear or if you'll need to bring your own. Depending on the company that you booked with, this can vary.

Consider a Portable Charter for Any Electronics

A portable charger with multiple ports and enough juice to last throughout the day is another great idea to bring aboard. This is especially true if you plan on taking a ton of photos or videos with your phone so that you always have power.

You could also consider bringing a waterproof case or bag for electronics. This will protect your items from water damage and allow you to bring them on board without worry.
