Cliff Jumping In The Virgin Islands

For eons humans have stumbled across places so incredible that they had to be kept secret. There are secret spots like this all throughout the Virgin Islands. Some of these wondrous places are in the form of 20-25 ft high rocks jutting out of the ocean, which are perfect for jumping off of a cliff into the deep waters below. These unique geological features are known as sea cliffs. The best spots for cliff jumping in the USVI are easy to keep secret because they are not down some road or by a beach on St. John or St. Thomas, or anywhere on a map of the Caribbean.

Island Roots Charters’ Secret Cliff Jumping Spot In The USVI Is Only Accessible By Charter Boat

Would-be cliff jumpers wanting to experience the thrill of falling several stories through the air and splashing into the deep ocean water beneath these sheer rock-faced walls must be prepared to travel to a remote location that can only be accessed by charter boat. And, even by boat, the secret location isn’t revealed without having a captain who knows where to find the perfect cliff from which to jump, and is also willing to take guests there. Of course, everyone must swear to a lifelong oath never to post the coordinates on social media!

Clues

For those who want some clues on where this secret cliff jumping spot could be, we could slowly unroll a cloth pirate-style map with a green crayon drawn palm tree grove on St. John with a dashed yellow line leading to a “X” that marks the cliffs out in a secret Caribbean cove, but for a blog article it’s easier to say: it is a remote cove on the north side of an outlying cay in the U.S Virgin Islands.

Destination Details

This one cliff to which we take our charter tour guests offers an exciting (and safe) cliff jumping opportunity, but there are many other cliffs out there that may not be safe, or are untested. It should be universal wisdom to never be the first one to jump from a sea cliff.

Cliff Heights

With two different heights to jump from 15ft (4.572 meters) and 25ft (7.62 meters), the cliffs we visit allow for novice to intermediate jumping. The deep water entry is 30 feet. That means jumpers should be sure to remove any jewelry or watches, because retrieving anything that deep isn’t easily recovered.

Fun fact: Laso Schaller's 58.8-meter jump is recognized as the world record for the highest cliff jump. He set this record in 2015 by jumping from a height of 58.8 meters (193 feet) into a natural pool in Maggia, Switzerland, reaching speeds of over 120 kph (75 mph) on impact.

Cliff Jumping Preparation

After a thorough safety briefing, a short swim from the boat and up a natural stone staircase will lead cliff jumpers to the top of the cliff face.

Always start with the small jump first. Rinse and repeat if you're having fun. The boat will hover just offshore and can offer some great photographic moments.
